Housecall Pro is broad, capable software — and its users mostly like it. But it's priced for teams, most of what you'd want sits above the entry plan, and its billing and cancellation practices draw real, documented complaints. QuoteIron is the opposite bet: free for 5 jobs a month or $15.99/mo flat, offline quoting, invoicing and scheduling, and you cancel in your App Store or Google Play settings without a phone call.

Let's be fair before we're blunt. Housecall Pro is feature-rich — scheduling, dispatch, a customer-facing portal, native payments, marketing tools — and it's genuinely well-reviewed, at 4.7/5 across 2,742 reviews on Capterra as of July 2026. Plenty of growing shops are happy on it. Two things push a solo operator to look elsewhere: the price is shaped for a crew, and the way it bills and cancels is a repeated sore spot in public reviews. Both are below, with the numbers and the links.

From Housecall Pro's own pricing page, re-checked 2026-09-11, with the check date printed beside each price. The $59 Basic headline is the annual-billing rate; month-to-month it's $79 — for one user. The features a solo shop tends to want, like QuickBooks sync, live on Essentials at $149–189/mo.

Card fees without the markup. Housecall Pro lists 2.99% for online card payments and 3.49% for Amex and business cards. With QuoteIron you pay Stripe's standard 2.9% + 30¢ on every domestic card, QuoteIron adds 0%, and Pro is $15.99/month (published rates, Sept 2026). See the full fee comparison
We don't make claims we can't show you. These are verbatim from Housecall Pro's own Better Business Bureau complaint file — fetched July 2026. The software scores well; the billing and cancellation experience is a different story, and it's the single most-cited reason solo operators want out. Housecall Pro's overall Trustpilot score sits at 2.9/5, driven heavily by these same complaints.

Fair is fair: QuoteIron is not the only alternative a one-person shop should price. Figures below are from each company’s own pricing page, read October 8, 2026. Joist lists no free plan (a 14-day trial instead); Contractor+ and QuoteIron both offer a free plan capped at 5 documents a month.
| App | Entry plans | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| QuoteIron | Free for 5 jobs a month; Pro $15.99/mo or $159.99/yr | One paid plan, everything included; 1050+ job price book; no live QuickBooks sync |
| Joist | Basics $10/mo (up to 5 documents a month); Pro $17/mo (unlimited documents) | Change orders and the license-and-insurance block are listed under Elite at $32/mo; scheduling under Run at $70/mo introductory |
| Contractor+ | Freedom $0 (up to 5 estimates or invoices a month); Pro for 1 user listed at $29/mo | Its QuickBooks Online connection is listed under Pro Team ($58/mo, first 2 users included) |
A full three-way breakdown is in Housecall Pro vs Joist vs QuoteIron.
Housecall Pro’s pricing page on October 8, 2026: Basic $59/mo billed annually ($79 monthly) for 1 user, Essentials $149 ($189) for 5 users, Max $299 ($329) for 8 users, with a 14-day free trial and no credit card required. QuickBooks Online sync and flat-rate pricing first appear on Essentials; the price book is on Basic. Its pricing page lists card processing “as low as 2.59%.”
The right answer depends on how many hands are on the tools.
The reason a one-man shop ends up on a $149/mo tier is usually two or three documents, not a suite. In QuoteIron they're all on the free plan too, and all in the single $15.99 tier — there's nothing above it to upgrade to.
All on the free plan too, and in QuoteIron Pro at $15.99/mo, month-to-month, cancel anytime — automatic email reminders and the chase list are included free, with text reminders added on Pro. Guides: how to write a change order · receipt vs invoice · Net 30 vs due on receipt.
No — and we won't say that. The software is capable and highly rated (4.7/5 on Capterra, July 2026). The documented problems are specifically about billing and cancellation: charges continuing after people believed they'd cancelled, and no way to cancel without contacting support. That's a real, sourced pattern on its BBB file and Trustpilot page — but it's a customer-service and billing issue, not a fake product.
Yes — that's the commitment. Pro is sold through the App Store and Google Play, so you cancel it there, in your subscription settings, anytime: no phone call, no retention pitch, and no per-document caps holding you hostage. It runs to the end of the period you've paid for. It's the opposite of the phone-gated cancellation that shows up in Housecall Pro's complaints — and if you ever do leave, your data exports in one tap.
Plenty, honestly: no dispatch or crew scheduling, no GPS, no marketing suite, no live two-way QuickBooks sync. QuoteIron is deliberately narrow — quoting, invoicing and a one-person schedule done right — not a crew platform. If you need the suite, Housecall Pro is the better tool.
No — bring it with you. Export your customers from Housecall Pro (Customers → Actions → Export, admins only) and your price book from Settings → Price Book → Services or Materials → Export; HCP emails both to you as CSV. In QuoteIron, open Settings → Import & Export → Import from Another App and choose the file — it reads your column names, shows you the rows before anything is added, and lets you re-point any column it guessed wrong. Clients land with name, phone, email, address and notes; book jobs land at the prices you were already charging. The file is read on your own device and nothing about it is uploaded, so your customer list never touches our server. One honest caveat, and it's Housecall Pro's, not ours: their own help center states that Profit Rhino price-book data cannot be exported at all — so if you're paying $199/mo for that catalog, it can't come with you to anywhere, including us.
Anything that exports a CSV with a row of column names — that's the honest floor, because you can always point QuoteIron's fields at your columns by hand before a single record is imported. Above that floor: Jobber is the one we've tested end to end against real exported files, clients and price book both. Housecall Pro, Square, QuickBooks, FieldPulse and Joist are built to match each app's published CSV export format — compatible, not yet battle-tested against a real file from each. What comes across is your client list and your price book; job, quote and invoice history doesn't, because no two of these apps shape it the same way.
Housecall Pro Basic is $79/mo month-to-month (or $59 on annual billing) for one user; QuoteIron is free for 5 jobs a month, or $15.99/mo flat with no annual commitment required. Over a year that's about $192 month-to-month (or $159.99 paid yearly) versus $708–948, and the useful QuickBooks-sync tier on HCP is $149–189/mo. All figures from each vendor's pricing page, July 2026.
Checked 2026-09-11 on their own pricing page: Basic is $79/mo billed monthly, or $59/mo billed annually, with 1 user included. Essentials is $189/$149 with 5 users included; extra users cost more on Essentials (price not published). Max is $329/$299 with 8 users included and "$35/mo per additional user." They list a 14-day free trial with no card required. QuoteIron is free for 5 jobs a month with no card, or $15.99/mo flat, month-to-month, for unlimited — one paid tier, nothing above it.
Yes, on both plans, free included. Record a deposit, a progress payment and a final payment against the same job; the invoice prints paid-to-date and the remaining balance rather than one all-or-nothing total, and each payment can go out as its own numbered receipt stamped PAID. Which document to send when is covered in receipt vs invoice.
You write a change order. In QuoteIron that's its own numbered document tied to the job it amends — the customer approves it on their phone, and the lines roll into that job's final invoice rather than being billed separately. There's a plain-English walkthrough and a copy-paste template in how to write a change order.
From their own pricing pages (October 8, 2026): QuoteIron is free for 5 jobs a month then $15.99 a month; Joist Basics is $10 a month but limited to 5 documents a month; Contractor+ has a free plan capped at 5 estimates or invoices a month and lists Pro for 1 user at $29 a month.
